International Affairs Discussion: Mexico's Presidential Election (Los Angeles)

Description:

Join your fellow Colonials in Los Angeles for an engaging discussion of Mexico's upcoming presidential election to be held on July 1. Professors Rod Camp (ESIA BA '66, MA '67) of Claremont McKenna College and Pamela Starr of USC will assess the candidates, highlight some of the demographic variables and qualities of Mexican voters which might explain the outcome of the election, explain differences in the Mexican election from its presidential counterpart in the U.S., and discuss the potential impact on U.S.-Mexico relations.

Registration includes a cocktail reception and valet parking at the California Club.

Rod CampDr. Roderic Ai Camp is the Philip McKenna Professor of the Pacific Rim at Claremont McKenna College. He served as a founding member of the Mexico Institute's Advisory Board at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in DC from 2002 - 2018, and is an elected member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He became a Global Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in 2017. Dr. Camp is a member of the editorial board of Mexican Studies and an advisory editor of Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Latin America. He is the author of numerous articles and thirty books on Mexico, including his most recent publications Mexico, What Everyone Needs to Know (2017); Politics in Mexico, Democratic Consolidation or Decline? (2013); and the Oxford Handbook of Mexican Politics (2012). In 2017, Mexico awarded Dr. Camp the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest decoration it can bestow on a foreigner, for his significant contributions to Mexico through the promotion of Mexican culture in the U.S.

Pamela StarrDr. Pamela K. Starr is the director of USC's U.S.-Mexico Network, a university fellow at the USC Center on Public Diplomacy, and an associate professor of teaching in USC's School of International Relations and in Public Diplomacy. She previously worked at the Eurasia Group, one of the world's leading global political risk advisory and consulting firms, where she was senior analyst responsible for Mexico. Prior to that, she spent eight years in Mexico as a professor of Latin American political economy at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), a private university in Mexico City. Dr. Starr’s research and writing focuses on three main topics: U.S.-Mexico relations, the politics, economy and foreign policy of contemporary Mexico, and the politics of economic policy-making across Latin America.


Please note that the California Club observes a business casual dress code. Denim, athletic shoes, and flip flops are not permitted in the club.
