MOSUL
is a character-driven, feature-length documentary, which will be distributed by Gravitas Ventures on May 14. It is built around several characters from contrasting backgrounds and ideologies who we come to know over a period of time (Oct 2016-July 2017), as they play their respective roles in the battle to reclaim the Iraqi city of Mosul from the Islamic State (ISIS). The story is told as a journey into the heart of darkness, through the eyes of a small band of Iraqi filmmakers who navigate up the Tigris River, from Baghdad to Mosul, and ultimately come face to face with evil itself.

Filmmakers/Panelists:

Dan Gabriel is the Executive Producer and creative direction behind "Mosul."  His experience as a filmmaker began while working for the U.S. government in 2003, including six tours to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. In addition to his GW degrees, Dan has completed graduate certificate programs in Filmmaking at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts (2013), and in Producing (2014) at UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television.

Mr. Sada is also the founder and co-editor of Daesh Daily, a daily English-language summary and analysis of local news sources, eyewitness reports and social media posts related to the ISIS terror group's activities. He is an expert on ISIS' use of social media and its online recruiting and propaganda methods.

Jens Dakin is an international strategic communications professional, specializing in using insights obtained from challenging operating environments to develop impactful and culturally-sensitive outreach campaigns. Mr. Dakin previously served in the British Army in a variety of operational theaters, including Iraq, and is an Associate Producer on "Mosul."

Moderator: Steven Livingston is Professor of Media and Public Affairs and International Affairs at GW. He studies the role of digital technology in governance and the provisioning of public goods, including human security and rights. He is currently working on projects relating to the use of commercial remote sensing satellites, DNA sequencing technology, and digital networks by human rights organizations. His past work has examined the use of mobile phones and digital mapping technologies by NGOs and community-based organizations (CBOs) in areas of limited statehood, places where the state fails to provide basic services.
