Dr. Mario Livio, Internationally Renowned Astrophysicist & Prize-Winning Author

Join us for a lecture and book signing by Dr. Mario Livio, who will deliver the 2014 Frank Howard Distinguished Lecture. He will discuss his most recent book, Brilliant Blunders, that profiles five remarkable scientists—Charles Darwin, William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), Linus Pauling, Fred Hoyle, and Albert Einstein—and the errors and mistakes they made en route to their astounding discoveries. The book was on the New York Times Best Sellers list, and was selected by the Washington Post as one of the "2013 Best Books of the Year."

Astrophysicist Mario LivioThe author of more than 300 scientific papers on topics ranging from dark energy and cosmology to black holes and extrasolar planets, Dr. Livio has provided a TedTalk, and appeared on 60 Minutes, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and NPR, among others. Dr. Livio works at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which conducts the scientific program of the Hubble Space Telescope, and will conduct the scientific program of the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope. Dr. Livio is also the author of five popular science books, including The Golden Ratio (for which he received the "Peano Prize" and the "International Pythagoras Prize").

After the lecture, Dr. Livio will provide a book signing. Copies of his book will be available for purchase starting at 6 p.m. and after the lecture. A reception follows the lecture.

This event is open to the GW community and the general public.
